which wood is nice, Oak or Dark Pine?

I am planning to buy some furniture sets. As, I am not so good on this topic, i was wondering what kind of wood would you prefer to buy? Which is more stronger and expensive, Oak or Dark Pine?

Pine is a soft wood. When it's been stained dark, every scratch and dent shows up lighter and looks cheap. I love old pine done in a light cherry stain, then the knicks and dents make it look vintage. Pine is generally cheaper than oak.
Oak is stronger, is more expensive, but again, it is a naturally light wood, and if you scratch, nick, or wear out a part of the surface by normal wear and tear, such as on a coffee table, the lighter wood underneath the dark surface, is going to show.
I have yet to afford a piece of dark stained furniture with a factory-applied finish that doesn't look cheap after a few years. Unless I go to a thrift or antique store and buy old cherry or mahogany or some other old hard wood. Well, my Ethan Allen maple set is holding up very well.
I'd even rather buy unfinished furniture (no bargain) and stain and either polyurethane or oil it myself, because the surface lasts longer. Usually, I get oak pieces at thrift stores that have crackled finishes, strip and/sand them, re-stain them and rub at least 3 coats of polyurethane on. It's thicker than the factory coat.
I've never heard of anyone buying a new set, lightly sanding it and then putting on 2 more coats of polyurethane. Has anyone ever done that?
