 Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I have my jewelry appraisal updated?

Most insurance companies recommend that the appraisal be updated every two to five years as diamonds and gemstones appreciate/increase in value. It is important to maintain adequate coverage.

Will my stone(s) be removed from the mounting?

It is not necessary to remove the stone(s) as there are gemological formulas and equipment used by the appraiser to estimate the weight of the stones being evaluated.

Do I have to leave my jewelry overnight?

We are able to offer the service while you wait AND watch if you prefer.

How do I purchase a separate rider for my jewelry?

You can consult your current insurance agent or contact Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company. Here in the Western New York area The Insurance Marketplace out of Rochester can assist you in this process.

Who is qualified to perform the appraisal?

Most insurance agents require the appraisal to be performed by an unbiased, independent, professional and experienced appraiser, possessing a graduate gemologist degree. Due to the increase in fraudulent claims and inaccurate appraisals many agencies insist on this.

What is the charge for an appraisal?

The fees will vary based upon the amount of pieces, the time to evaluate, measure, grade, weigh and photograph the items, and any additional research that is required for completion of the report. After the initial consultation the appraiser will inform you of the exact fee you will be charged before the appraisal begins. Our appraisals are competitively priced, precise and accurate using state of the art gemological equipment and having over ten years worth of appraisal experience. In most cases you will receive your appraisal the very same day with an extra copy provided for you to give to your insurance agent.

What Information Should a Professional Appraisal Contain?

The appraisal report should contain enough detailed information so that the item can be replaced with one of equal quality and worth. Some examples of information that should be included are: the type of metal, the purity and stampings of the gold or platinum, metal weight, method of manufacture, style of setting, species or variety of gemstones, gemstone’s measurements and weight, color and clarity, the origin of the gemstone- whether the stones are natural or lab created, clarity enhanced or color treated, a photograph of the piece and the estimated retail replacement value.
